Shoreline erosion is a common problem faced by home owners on Lake Michigan. Shoreline erosion is caused by a number of factors including storms, wave action, freeze/thaw and fluctuating lake levels. Gillen Marine Construction has over a hundred years of experience protecting shorelines along Lake Michigan. • Understand that erosion is part of living on a Great Lake. When planning your project, remember that erosion is always occurring on the Great Lakes’ shorelines. Locate your structures a safe distance from the shoreline. • Maintain the existing vegetation along the shoreline. When you cut or trim shrubs and trees, always leave the stump.

Breakwaters are barriers built offshore to protect part of the shoreline. They act as a barrier to waves, preventing erosion and allowing the beach to grow. The dissipation of wave energy allows material carried by longshore currents to be deposited behind the breakwater. This protects the shore. However, the beach behind the breakwater often.

This book was digitized and reprinted from the collections of the University of California Libraries. (3) Natural shoreline features provide natural erosion control in various ways.

Nearshore lakebeds and beach slopes change and shoals form, erosion uncovers or sorts out sand, gravel, cobbles, boulders and bedrock from beneath glacial till and other fine soils. These more energy resistant materials are formed into wave−.

Vegetation for Erosion Control. If your location is along a small water shoreline, such as the shoreline of a river, lake, stream or similar water bodies, vegetation and natural erosion control may be a good option. Anytime you are dealing with erosion. Flexamat ® offers a permanent solution to stop shoreline erosion while aesthetically conforming to the landscape.

Flexamat ® stops erosion caused by waves, ice, burrowing of muskrats/nutria and erosion caused by fish, such as Tillapia. Flexamat ® enables safe maintenance of the shoreline. Commercial mowers may be used over Flexamat ® or allow native vegetation can.

Bulkheads provide excellent erosion control if they are installed properly. The toe of a bulkhead needs to extend down into the pond bottom, the sides should be built with wing protection, and the top of the bulkhead needs to be anchored into the slope with a dead-man anchor.

ShoreFlex® installation is quick and easy, with a 11 lb/sqft weight and the ability to be permanently anchored in place, most installations can be accomplished with smaller light weight equipment.

Multiple erosion control uses: roadside, canal and ditch lining, landfills, let downs and more. Performs better than rock. The Blue Book provides standards and specifications for the selection, design and implementation of erosion and sediment control practices for the development of Erosion and Sediment Control Plans for the SPDES General Permit for Stormwater Discharges from Construction Activity.

Alternatively, the Virginia Erosion & Sediment Control Handbook can also be downloaded in PDF sections by clicking on the links below. Chapter 3 is very large, so it has been broken into individual sections to facilitate downloading for slower connections.

Our ShoreSOX® Erosion Control system halts soil erosion and re-stabilizes shorelines and hillsides using an open-ended containment system that is filled with a locally sourced organic media such as blow-in mulch.

ShoreSOX is designed with a knitted polyethylene soft armor cover that is lined with burlap. Streambank and shoreline protection consists of restoring and protecting banks of streams, lakes, estuaries, and excavated channels against scour and erosion by using vegetative plantings, soil bioengineering, and structural systems.

File Size: 1MB. Protecting Your Shoreline from Erosion Deep-rooted native plants growing in the water and the wet areas along the shore protect shorelines from wave and ice erosion. Many property owners attempt to maintain turf grass along their shoreline and remove aquatic vegetation for swimming and other water activities.

Turf grass does not grow well in wet. Erosion Control Blankets Erosion control blankets such as jute, coir (coconut husk fiber) and wood-fiber blankets can be a product used in natural shoreline projects. These are useful on slopes for holding the soil in place until plants become established.

Section One: Introduction to Shoreline Erosion. Erosion is the wearing away of the land surface by the action of wind, water, ice, or gravity. Sedimentation is the deposition of eroded soils in waterways or other locations.

Shorelines do not exist in an unchanging condition. Shoreline_BookFINAL:Shoreline_Book 2/6/ AM. Page 6. The type of shoreline erosion control structure needed is based on the conditions at your site and the erosive energy at your site.

In some cases shore protection by vegetation alone may be inadequate to protect the shoreline. In these cases a combination of vegetation and technical structures may be necessary (e.g., vegetated armoring). A woven monofilament geotextile was first used as a filter in a shoreline erosion control application in Florida in Since that time, the use of geotextiles has become commonplace and has grown to include the broader category of geosynthetics. However, a geotextile is the most common geosynthetic used in shoreline erosion control.Unlike traditional erosion control products, Envirolok stabilizes the underlying soils and creates an encapsulated barrier, protecting it from further erosion.

The bag-fill mix has been developed in collaboration with our engineers and horticulturalists to maximize strength and provide ideal growing conditions for native plantings.Existing erosion control was no longer cutting it at a local condominium complex in Vermilion. We stepped in to increase the height of off-shore break walls and protect the coastal cove against rising Lake Erie water levels.
